Seed Plan was founded in 1999 by Prof. Ted Adams. In collaboration with Karthi, a youngster from Karumbalai, and Dr. Taj Adams he started an after school study center at Karumbalai, to provide a quiet place for students and also a place with electricity as many students did not have electric lights at home. Beginning with Karthi’s passionate desire to improve the lives of other youngsters in the community, our story has been one of a community helping itself. The initial volunteers were youth who had managed to go to college, and helped children at the center achieve the same goal. Seed Plan then started the centers at Thathaneri and Sambakudi. In 2020, with support from Asha for Education, Seed Plan started centers in Alwarpuram, Mathiyiam and Kalmedu.
Ted Adams, born in Oregon, USA, had a deep connection with India from a young age. In 1999, he moved to Madurai with a vision to transform education for underprivileged children. Ted’s approach focused on critical thinking, creativity, and understanding—moving away from rote learning. Under his guidance, many students gained confidence, pursued higher education, and uplifted their families. Though Ted passed away in 2015, his legacy continues through the dedicated efforts of Seed Plan’s volunteers and alumni.
We run after school study centers in Karumbalai, Thathaneri, Alwarpuram, Mathiyiam, Kalmedu and Sambakudi. The centers are open from 6 to 9pm in the evenings, and on weekends. Volunteers are available to help with school work, and there are lots of extra-curricular activities to create successful paths for students.
S. Vikki, the director of Seed Plan, is a true example of the change the organization strives to create. Growing up in Karumbalai, Vikki joined Seed Plan as a student in Class 5. The support and guidance he received helped him excel in his studies and discover his passion for social work. After earning a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola College, Chennai, he returned to Madurai to give back to his community.
Vikki leads Seed Plan with dedication, ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn and grow. He believes in empowering others, just as the center empowered him, and works tirelessly to carry forward the mission of building brighter futures.
